Recalibration - Protocol Enhancements for Standing and Walking
Friday, April 24th 10:15 AM-4:25 PM Pacific
HSE Teaching Team:
Phil Shenk
Susan Koenig
Ryan Moschell
Farzaneh Jafari
Melissa Fray
Jacqui Neurauter

Open to Members Only
This year our Recalibration will be focused on protocol enhancements.
Please Note: Recalibration presentations use Hanna Somatic techniques and vocabulary common to all Hanna Somatic practitioners or students. Such terms as Red Light, Green Light, Trauma Reflex, pandiculation, and more will probably not be explained during Recalibration, as their use is understood by practitioners and students. Please consider whether you are prepared and qualified to come to Recalibration. We want you to have a wonderful experience!
Session 1, 10:15 AM–12:00 PM
Session 2, 1:00 PM–4:25 PM
Many of us end our sessions with a brief amount of time for standing and walking. This recalibration day will enhance your understanding of these movements in uprightness with explorations on the floor and in standing and walking. You will become more clear about how and why standing movements can be a key component in preventing our habitual inefficient patterns from reinstating themselves so easily.
Throughout the day you will explore strategies, experience enhancement movements, and variations that you can integrate into our HSE protocols when working with clients, classes, or yourself, either in person or remotely.
Our choice of enhancements is based on feedback from the two previous years of recalibration and includes hands, feet, head-neck-shoulder, overall full-soma integrative movements, and more.
Phil Shenk, CHSE, entered Thomas Hanna’s first Hanna Somatic Education Training in 1990. Since that time, he has been practicing, teaching, and nurturing Hanna Somatic Education in the world in a variety of ways, and intends to continue doing so. He is a core member of the Novato Institute’s Teaching Team since 1992, a HSE Licensed Trainer of Practitioners since 2003, and a co-founder and charter member of the Association for Hanna Somatic Education, Inc. since 1997.

Susan Koenig, CHSE, was in the 1990 Wave 1 Hanna Somatic Education (HSE) training, taught by Thomas Hanna. She maintains a private clinical practice, mostly on Zoom. She also teaches and hosts guest teachers in her once-a-month Saturday Somatic Movement class. Since 2013, her classes have maintained a large YouTube and SoundCloud audience. She is part of the Core Teaching Team in the professional Certification HSE training program. She has spent the last 34 years co-teaching in this program with Phil Shenk and Eleanor Criswell Hanna and greatly misses the knowledge and inspiration Eleanor Criswell Hanna brought to this training. (Eleanor passed away in September, 2024). Susan is very proud of the larger teaching staff in the HSE Training program who will perpetuate this amazing training after she retires. She and Phil Shenk welcome Ryan Moschell as a “core teacher.” Susan continues to study and develop curriculum in the HSE Training and for her own classes. She has been accepted as “Master Somatic Movement Educator,” through ISMETA, the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association, a collaborative of individuals and organizations dedicated to growing the profession of Somatic Movement Education and Therapy. She specializes in the new myo-fascial-bio-tensegrity model of anatomy and in exploring the creativity of somatic movement for health, personal well being, and global healing.

Feeling Biotensegrity—Learning Through Experiential Activities
Saturday, April 25th 9:00 AM-12:00 PM Pacific
Chris Morita Clancy and Susan Lowell de Solórzano
Biotensegrity provides an alternative to the machine and architectural models that have been used for analyzing human structure and movement for hundreds of years. Tensegrity is a way of perceiving structural possibilities that is relatively new to human understanding. Biotensegrity investigates tensegrity in biology.
Through a series of experiential activities, we will explore the concepts of tensegrity and biotensegrity, and the related ideas that give us a new perspective on what's going on with our dynamic, moving, and constantly changing physiology.
Through your own somatic awareness, discover why and how movement teachers and manual therapists worldwide are applying the concepts of biotensegrity in their work.
Chris Morita Clancy is the founder of Embodied Biotensegrity, a leading platform for education in biotensegrity, serving practitioners, educators, and researchers worldwide (embodiedbiotensegrity.ca). She is a board member of the Stephen M. Levin Biotensegrity Archive and a founding member of the Pacific Northwest Biotensegrity Interest Group (PNWBIG) and BIG Portugal LIVE! She is a contributor to Everything Moves: How Biotensegrity Informs Human Movement by Susan Lowell de Solórzano (Handspring) and Spiral Bound by Karen Kirkness (Handspring).
Alongside Graham Scarr and Susan Lowell de Solórzano, Chris co-hosts and produces the BiotensegriTea Party, an ongoing series exploring the latest in biotensegrity. She facilitates biotensegrity-focused trainings and immersions in Canada and Portugal as well as workshops and conference presentations, including the ReVIEWING Black Mountain College Conference and the International Fascia Research Congress.

From Crawling to Connection—Reclaiming Early Patterns of Development
Sunday, April 26th, 10:40AM-12:00 PM Pacific
Gena Rho
In this somatic movement workshop, we will explore the vital role of crawling for whole-body integration. Although some children skip this developmental milestone and proceed directly to walking, bypassing this stage can lead to missed opportunities for crucial neurological and physical development.
We’ll discuss how crawling helps integrate the body through its center, supporting eye coordination, spatial awareness, and overall sensory-motor development. Despite its importance, the medical community often undervalues or overlooks crawling. This session will examine the long-term implications of that oversight and how somatic movement practices can help restore and reintegrate missed developmental patterns in both children and adults.
Participants will be guided through patterns of early development—such as creeping, crawling, and rolling—to illuminate their lasting impact on the body and nervous system. By exploring these foundational movements in connection with Thomas Hanna’s reflex patterns, we can deepen our understanding of how early disruptions can influence overall function, including gross and fine motor skills, as well as emotional well-being.
This developmental lens offers practical insights for enhancing personal awareness and opens new possibilities for practitioners and students working within the field of Clinical Somatic Education.
Gena Rho, CCSE, Gena Rho’s professional path has traversed from early childhood educator, professional dancer, yogi, to Clinical Somatic Educator. Her desire for a deeper understanding of neuro-development led her to Clinical Somatic Education (CSE) when one of her sons struggled with low muscle tone in the core of his body; traditional therapies—including early intervention and occupational therapy—yielded limited progress.
Through CSE, she discovered a profound connection between early movement patterns, reflex integration (particularly the red-light reflex), and functional challenges. This understanding helped her see how disconnection at the center of the body can impact strength, coordination, confidence, and emotional well-being—not only in children but throughout a lifespan. Today, Gena weaves this insight into her work, helping others reclaim ease, awareness, and empowerment through somatic movement.
Gena maintains a private clinical somatic practice in both Maplewood, NJ, and New York City. In addition to working with individual clients, she offers a wide range of group experiences, including workshops, retreats, and mentoring programs for movement educators and somatic practitioners.
Gena designs and facilitates professional development workshops tailored for educators and parents, supporting them with tools to integrate somatic awareness into their personal and professional lives.
Trained in the lineage of Thomas Hanna, Gena completed her clinical training with Martha Peterson of Essential Somatics in 2017 and has been a member of the Essential Somatics Training Team since then.
Gena holds an MFA in Dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. In the mid-1990s, she performed internationally as a member of the renowned Trisha Brown Dance Company. Before embarking on her dance career, she worked as a classroom teacher, a foundation that continues to inform her educational and somatic work today.

Canine Hanna Somatics®, and How Working with Animals Can Enhance Your Human Somatics Practice
Sunday, April 26th, 1:00PM-2:00 PM Pacific
Alissa Mayer
Dogs, horses, and other animals (like humans) experience stress in their daily domestic lives, and can develop chronic involuntary muscle contractions (tension). Practicing Canine Hanna Somatics will not only enhance your relationship with your dog and make your dog feel wonderful, but it also gives you an opportunity to hone your non-verbal communication skills and the feel of hands-on guided somatic exercises that will greatly enhance your skill and effectiveness when working with human clients.
In this presentation, you'll learn how to start recognizing the characteristic postural presentations of the Red Light Reflex, Green Light Reflex, and Trauma/Asymmetry Posture in dogs of any breed and how to guide any dog through three gentle Canine Hanna Somatics exercises that will help them begin to reset the resting levels of muscle tone back toward a healthy neutral—also known as letting go of their chronic tension!
Alissa Mayer, BSc (Equine), EHSE-C, is a Certified Equine Hanna Somatics® Educator and the founder of the Association for Equine Hanna Somatics Education (AEHSE). She co-taught the Equine Hanna Somatics Professional Training & Certification program with creator and founder Eleanor Criswell Hanna for 8 years, and became the Director of the program in 2024, after Eleanor’s passing. Alissa is an author, mother, posture specialist, international clinician, serial horse rescuer and teacher with a passion for using neuroscience to help animals (and the humans who love them) live their best lives.
With a bachelor's degree in Equine Science, Alissa has 30+ years experience in the horse industry as a groom, trainer, riding instructor, hoof trimmer, and traveling clinician. Since 2010, she has worked somatically with thousands of horses, dogs and humans (and one cat) all over the US, Hawaii, Canada, and western Europe. Alissa teaches the same foundational concepts to everyone: whether serving Olympic teams or backyard horses, horse-husbands or seasoned equine bodyworkers, Alissa's approach is to first resolve postural dysfunction, chronic tension, and pain by restoring neutral resting muscle tone with Hanna Somatics. Alissa then teaches clients to develop the brain-body connections and skills to leverage the power of their personal electro-magnetic fields to connect and communicate on a non-verbal, nervous system level with animals, regardless of discipline or training style.
Alissa teaches and mentors students and certified EHS professionals all over the world, both online and in person at her home farm in Oregon. When she isn't working or playing with horses, Alissa enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, reading, writing, foraging for wild mushrooms, and going on adventures! alissa@equinehannasomatics.org

Hanna Somatics for Dancers—Going beyond Stretching and Reclaiming Strength, Flexibility, and Coordination Through the Nervous System
Sunday, April 26th, 2:05PM-3:35 PM Pacific
Nikki Semeniuk
Dancers, athletes, yogis, and even movement educators may unknowingly reinforce cycles of tension, compensation, and weakness through well-meaning but outdated stretching and conditioning habits. Overstretching can lead to unstable joints, decreased functional strength, and long-term imbalances. These patterns not only compromise performance but also increase the risk of injury and chronic pain.
Hanna Somatics provides an essential missing link—re-educating the brain’s connection to movement through gentle, conscious engagement rather than force. This approach enhances nervous system regulation, proprioceptive awareness, and functional movement quality—tools that are crucial for dancers but deeply applicable across all movement modalities.
This experiential presentation offers a fresh perspective on flexibility, recovery, and injury prevention in dance and somatic practice. Participants will explore how Hanna Somatics and NMP Somatics (Natural Movement Pattern Somatics) can enhance body awareness, reduce injury risk, and improve functional flexibility through neuromuscular reeducation.
Movement will be integrated throughout the presentation, alternating between short discussions, demonstrations, and guided somatic explorations—some standing, and others on the floor. Participants will experience how pandiculation and mindful movement can safely release muscular tension, restore balanced tone, and rebuild integrated strength. The session emphasizes how these neuro-somatic principles can be directly applied to dance, teaching, and therapeutic movement contexts for more efficient, embodied, and sustainable motion.
Nikki Miller Semeniuk, CHSE, is a Certified Hanna Somatic Educator and the founder of Serenity Somatics. She completed her studies at the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training in Novato, California, and is a proud member of the Association for Hanna Somatic Education (AHSE). Additionally, she is registered with ISMETA and holds the titles of Registered Somatic Movement Educator & Therapist (RSME, RSMT). With over 25 years of experience in teaching dance, Nikki specializes in body development, coordination, and movement. She is certified by the Canadian Dance Teachers Association (CDTA) and is also a Certified Acrobatic Arts instructor, as well as a certified yoga teacher registered with the Yoga Alliance.
Nikki's expertise in bodies and movement stems from 40 years of training and instructing in dance, along with over 25 years in the dance industry and 23 years as a dance studio owner. After experiencing a hip injury in 2013, which resulted in chronic pain and the eventual sale of her successful studio, she discovered Hanna Somatic Education. This approach became her primary means of managing daily pain. By mastering the techniques of Hanna Somatics, Nikki has regained her freedom of movement and learned to live with her condition.
Nikki developed and presently leads the Somatic Exercise Teacher Training program. Rooted in the principles and traditions of Hanna Somatics, this professional training is offered both online and in person across North America. Additionally, the program is pre-approved for continuing education credits by several associations and organizations, including NCBTMB (National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork). Nikki’s vision is to cultivate and grow the Somatic community by teaching body workers and health professionals the fundamentals of Hanna Somatics, empowering them to share this knowledge with their clients.

Lisa Sack, Indu Vashist, and Alexandra Ni
This year’s movement collage will offer variations on the Cat Stretch series. Many of us develop habits in the way we practice the sequence. Identifying and relinquishing those habits can lead to new insights and movement possibilities. Join us for the perfect way to wrap up the 2026 Convention and embody its focus. Enliven your personal practice, break from the habitual, unlock potential, and find novel ways of moving through the Cat Stretch series.
