Join Susan Koenig, Hanna Somatic Education (HSE) Trainer and Wave 1 graduate, for a monthly series exploring HSE through the emerging science of biotensegrity (BT).
New to biotensegrity? The term may be unfamiliar, but the idea offers a fresh way and new paradigm to understand how living organisms are structured and move. Together, we’ll explore how current research is expanding our understanding of anatomy, neuroscience, movement, and physiology—connecting these ideas with HSE concepts, techniques, and clinical work.
You’ll discover why the spine is less like a stack of blocks and why the traditional agonist–antagonist model of muscle action offers an incomplete picture. We’ll also explore how gravity and ground reaction forces interact with the body’s internal forces of tension and compression.
Each class combines clear explanations with experiential movement activities to help bring biotensegrity principles to life. The first hour focuses on concepts and practice; the final half hour is for discussion and Q&A.
Susan Koenig, CHSE, was in the 1990 Wave 1 Hanna Somatic Education (HSE) training, taught by Thomas Hanna. She maintains a private clinical practice, mostly on Zoom. She also teaches and hosts guest teachers in her once-a-month Saturday Somatic Movement class. Since 2013, her classes have maintained a large YouTube and SoundCloud audience. She is part of the Core Teaching Team in the professional Certification HSE Training Program. She has spent the last 34 years co-teaching in this program with Phil Shenk and Eleanor Criswell Hanna and greatly misses the knowledge and inspiration Eleanor Criswell Hanna brought to this training. (Eleanor passed away in September, 2024). Susan is very proud of the larger teaching staff in the HSE Training program who will perpetuate this amazing training after she retires. She and Phil Shenk welcome Ryan Moschell as a “core teacher.” Susan continues to study and develop curriculum in the HSE Training and for her own classes. She has been accepted as “Master Somatic Movement Educator,” through ISMETA, the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association, a collaborative of individuals and organizations dedicated to growing the profession of Somatic Movement Education and Therapy. She specializes in the new myo-fascial-bio-tensegrity model of anatomy and in exploring the creativity of somatic movement for health, personal well being, and global healing.
