PRESENTATIONS AND PRESENTERS

Biotensegrity and Hanna Somatic Education

with Susan Koenig

An engaging experiential session exploring biotensegrity through the lens of Hanna Somatic Education. Using movement, demonstration, and playful experiential learning, participants will investigate how the soma organizes through dynamic relationships of tension, support, and ease.

Susan Koenig, CHSE, was in the 1990 Wave 1 Hanna Somatic Education (HSE) training, taught by Thomas Hanna. She maintains a private clinical practice, mostly on Zoom. She also teaches and hosts guest teachers in her once-a-month Saturday Somatic Movement class. Since 2013, her classes have maintained a large YouTube and SoundCloud audience. She is part of the Core Teaching Team in the professional Certification HSE training program. She has spent the last 34 years co-teaching in this program with Phil Shenk and Eleanor Criswell Hanna and greatly misses the knowledge and inspiration Eleanor Criswell Hanna brought to this training. (Eleanor passed away in September, 2024). Susan is very proud of the larger teaching staff in the HSE Training program who will perpetuate this amazing training after she retires. She and Phil Shenk welcome Ryan Moschell as a “core teacher.” Susan continues to study and develop curriculum in the HSE Training and for her own classes. She has been accepted as “Master Somatic Movement Educator,” through ISMETA, the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association, a collaborative of individuals and organizations dedicated to growing the profession of Somatic Movement Education and Therapy. She specializes in the new myo-fascial-bio-tensegrity model of anatomy and in exploring the creativity of somatic movement for health, personal well being, and global healing.

Hanna Somatic Strategies for Hypermobility

with Chris Barnett

Participants will learn to understand neuromuscular patterns common in hypermobile bodies, recognize when traditional HSE makes symptoms worse, apply Hanna Somatic principles to support stability and proprioception, modify somatic movements to avoid end-range loading, and teach hypermobile clients to build cortical control and joint safety.

Chris Barnett, CHSE, is an integrative wellness leader, clinical Hanna Somatic Educator, MD-certified Massage Therapist, and 500-hour certified Yoga and Pilates teacher with over 20 years of experience in the movement, bodywork, and mind-body education space.

With a foundation in Irish dance, athletics, and music, Chris brings a unique somatic understanding to chronic pain and movement dysfunction. She holds a BA in Psychology from UMBC and is completing comprehensive Pilates training with Balanced Body, expanding her expertise in behavioral science and evidence-informed practice.

Known as a "movement detective," Chris specializes in developing customized, interdisciplinary programs that restore functional movement, reduce pain, and empower long-term body awareness. Beyond one-on-one work, her focus is shifting toward program development, mentorship, and strategic leadership in the wellness field. She is passionate about helping teams, organizations, and communities integrate holistic movement and somatic education into broader health and performance initiatives.

Chris’s leadership vision is to bridge clinical insight with education, movement, and coaching to create sustainable systems of care that empower people to live pain-free, embodied lives.

Exploring the Psoas

with Farzaneh Jafari

Explore the psoas through breath and movement as a pathway to stability, support, and ease. Inspired by Thomas Hanna’s understanding of the soma as a living process, this session invites participants to experience how the psoas influences posture, balance, breathing, and the body’s response to stress, while supporting greater organization and ease within the soma.

Farzaneh Jafari, CHSE , is also a certified Yoga Therapist, and has been offering yoga therapy for the last decade. Her passionate desire to understand the mind/body connection and its relation to movement led her to Hanna Somatic Education. Farzaneh has developed a unique teaching style that integrates movements from HSE and therapeutic yoga to support clients’ physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

The Pelvic Floor: Support, Connection, and Practice

with Lori Seymour

Revisit key pelvic floor explorations and expand into practical ways of working with clients, with attention to support, connection, and deeper patterns of organization within the soma.

Lori Seymour, CHSE - Certified as a Pilates instructor in 1998, a GYROTONIC® Pre-trainer in 1999, and a Hanna Somatic Educator® in 2018, Lori has a background in teaching modern dance, dance improvisation, and swimming. Currently, she is leading in-person sessions at PhysioFit Physical Therapy in Los Altos and providing private virtual sessions.
